It is named in honor of the Viceroy of New Spain, Don Gaspar de Zúñiga y Acevedo, Count of Monterrey.
Monterrey, a true metropolis of northern Mexico. It is located at the northern foothills of the Sierra Madre Oriental, where the two main natural transportation corridors of northeastern Mexico converge: the Monclova-Ciudad Victoria longitudinal depression (flanked by the Sierra Madre, the Sierra de Mina, and the Sierra de la Silla) the great Sinolinal trough that cuts transversely across the Sierra Madre and drains the waters of the high plateau into the Gulf via the San Juan River (a tributary of the Bravo del Norte) and its tributaries.
