Its name—first as a ranch and later as a municipality—derives from the patron saint to whom the first chapel, “San Nicolás Tolentino,” was dedicated; it is further complemented by the surname “Garza,” which has been the predominant surname since its founding. The descendants of its first settler, Don Pedro de la Garza, who helped it flourish, consider this place to be the birthplace of the town of San Nicolás.
