The municipality of El Carmen is located northeast of the city of Monterrey, in the region known as the Gulf Coastal Plain. It is situated at coordinates 20°36′ north latitude and 100°21′ west longitude, at an elevation of 446 meters above sea level. It borders Salinas Victoria to the north and east, General Escobedo to the south, and Abasolo and Hidalgo to the west.
