Friar Diego Vázquez is considered its founder. It was incorporated as a town on January 7, 1821. It was formerly known as San Nicolás de Gualeguas. Its current name derives from the Gualeguas Indians who inhabited the region. The town was founded for the purpose of evangelization.

It is located in the northwestern part of the state, in the region known as the Gulf Coastal Plain. It borders Paras to the north, General Treviño to the south, the state of Tamaulipas to the east, and Sabinas Hidalgo to the west.
